History of the CITROEN 2CV

The Citroen 2CV is one of the most iconic economy cars ever produced, built in France from 1948 to 1990 across 42 uninterrupted years. Conceived by Citroen Vice-President Pierre Boulanger in 1936 under the codename TPV (Toute Petite Voiture), the Citroen 2CV was engineered to carry two farmers and 50 kg of potatoes across a ploughed field at 60 km/h while achieving near 80 mpg. Designer Andre Lefebvre developed 47 prototypes before World War II forced all TPVs into hiding to prevent German seizure. The Citroen 2CV debuted at the 1948 Paris Salon on 7 October to a mix of ridicule and fascination; journalists called it an umbrella on wheels, yet demand immediately exceeded supply by years. The car used an air-cooled flat-twin engine, a revolutionary interconnected suspension that ironed out rough farm tracks, and a removable canvas roof. The original 375 cc engine grew into the 2CV4 (435 cc) and the longer-lived 2CV6 (602 cc), which powered the majority of cars built. Special editions kept the Citroen 2CV culturally relevant through the 1980s: the Spot (1976), the art-deco two-tone Charleston (1980, made permanent from 1981), the James Bond 007 edition (1981), the Dolly (1985), and the Bamboo (1987). French production ended on 25 February 1988 and the final Citroen 2CV left the Mangualde factory in Portugal on 27 July 1990, exactly 42 years after launch. The saloon production total stands at 3,872,583 units; including the fourgonnette vans, Acadiane, and all A-Series derivatives, overall output reached approximately 5.1 million vehicles. The ultra-rare four-wheel-drive Citroen 2CV Sahara (1958-1971, twin engines, just 694 built) is the most coveted variant, reaching US$143,750 at auction in 2024. Standard Citroen 2CV saloons now average US$17,628 on the classic market, making the Citroen 2CV both historically significant and relatively accessible to collectors worldwide.

search.everycars.co is a website which goal is to provide you with all the information possible on a classic car. This is basically a classic car database. Our goal is to link every existing source of information related to all car models produced on earth between approximately year 1900 to year 2000. With all these information, you will be able to select the ideal classic car for a great renovation project.
This is a work in progress project, which has began by the end of year 2018. This is also a part time project, as our founder is having a 9-5 job during the day, and is working on the entire everycars projects on free time.
everycars is a larger project in which you will find several websites related to the classic car world. More than this database, we have also created a community for classic car renovation and a reversed job board (only in France).
