Uno

A total of approximately 8,800,000 FIAT Uno have been produced on earth in Italy and worldwide between 1983 and 1994. The Fiat Uno was launched in January 1983 to replace the ageing 127, and it did so by inventing the template every European supermini has followed since. Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign gave the Fiat Uno a tall, upright cabin with a very short bonnet — a package that looked odd next to its low-slung rivals but delivered class-leading interior space and, thanks to a drag coefficient of 0.33, class-leading economy. In December 1983 the Fiat Uno was voted European Car of the Year for 1984, edging out the Peugeot 205 in one of the closest votes in the award's history. Production ran at up to 2,200 cars per day at Mirafiori and Rivalta. The range grew quickly: the frugal Uno 45 ES, the diesel, and in 1985 the Uno Turbo i.e., whose 1.4-litre turbocharged four made 118 hp and 173 Nm, reaching 200 km/h and giving the Fiat Uno a genuine hot-hatch credential to set against the Peugeot 205 GTI and Golf GTI. A major restyle in 1989 brought smoothed bodywork and the new FIRE engines. Italian production ended in 1995 after more than six million cars, but the Fiat Uno lived on for decades in Brazil, Poland, Argentina and South Africa, taking the global total past 8.8 million — the eighth most-produced automotive platform in history. Surviving Uno Turbo i.e. cars are now genuinely rare and collectible, while the ordinary Fiat Uno has become a nostalgic emblem of 1980s Europe.
