Model A

The Ford Model A is one of the most iconic automobiles in American history, produced by the Ford Motor Company between 1927 and 1931 as a direct successor to the legendary Model T. Serial production of the Ford Model A began on November 1, 1927, with Henry Ford personally stamping the engine number on the very first unit on October 20, 1927. The car was publicly introduced on December 2, 1927 at Madison Square Garden in New York, attracting an estimated 100,000 visitors on opening day alone. Designed by Edsel Ford and engineer Joe Galamb, the Ford Model A featured a water-cooled inline four-cylinder engine of 200.5 cubic inches producing 40 horsepower, a conventional three-speed sliding-gear transmission, and four-wheel mechanical drum brakes -- a significant safety advance for the era. Edsel Ford gave the Ford Model A elegant Lincoln-inspired styling, earning it the nickname "baby Lincoln." The Ford Model A was offered in an extraordinary range of body styles: Tudor and Fordor sedans, roadsters, phaetons, business and sport coupes, a convertible cabriolet, convertible sedan, Victoria, station wagon, town car, and commercial variants. By February 1929 one million Ford Model A cars had been sold; two million by July that year. Production officially ended in early 1932, with a grand total of approximately 4,858,644 units built across all body styles and markets, assembled not only in Detroit but in Ford plants across the United States, Canada, and internationally. Today the Ford Model A is one of the most actively restored and collected prewar automobiles in the world, supported by a large network of clubs, parts suppliers, and specialists.
