History of the ASTON MARTIN DB2

A total of 411 ASTON MARTIN DB2 have been produced on earth in United Kingdom between 1950 and 1953. The Aston Martin DB2 is the car in which the modern Aston Martin was born. Unveiled at the New York Auto Show in April 1950 and built until April 1953, the Aston Martin DB2 married two halves of industrialist David Brown's 1947 shopping spree: the tubular chassis and suspension of the Aston Martin Atom, and the 2,580 cc twin-overhead-cam straight-six that W.O. Bentley had designed for Lagonda. That engine replaced the pushrod four of the DB1 and gave the DB2 105 bhp — enough for a genuine 110 mph — while the optional Vantage specification, Aston Martin's very first use of the name, raised output to 125 hp with bigger carburettors, a hotter inlet cam and 8.16:1 pistons. The hand-beaten fastback body was the work of Frank Feeley, who had come across from Lagonda, and its one-piece forward-hinging bonnet, faired-in headlamps and long tail set the visual grammar every subsequent DB would follow. Only 411 Aston Martin DB2 were built in three years, 102 of them the elegant drophead coupé. The DB2 was raced hard from the start: works cars finished 3rd, 5th and 7th in class at Le Mans in 1950 and took a class win in 1951, proving Aston Martin's competition credentials in a way the pre-war cars never had. In 1953 the Aston Martin DB2 gave way to the 2+2 DB2/4, which added a rear hatch and the 2.9-litre VB6E Vantage engine as standard. Today the DB2 sits among the most expensive 4% of collector cars, with a strong auction sell-through rate and values that have proved remarkably resilient through the 2024-2026 correction.
