History of the LAMBORGHINI Urraco

The Lamborghini Urraco is a mid-engined 2+2 coupe designed by Marcello Gandini at Carrozzeria Bertone and produced by Lamborghini in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy, between 1972 and 1979. Conceived as a direct rival to the Ferrari Dino, Maserati Merak and Porsche 911, the Lamborghini Urraco first appeared as a prototype at the Turin Motor Show in November 1970 before entering production two years later. The production Lamborghini Urraco P250 used a compact transverse mid-mounted 2.5-litre V8 with twin overhead camshafts per bank and four Weber carburettors producing 220 hp, housed in Gandini's sleek fastback body on a 2+2 cabin layout. A revised Lamborghini Urraco P250S arrived in 1973 with mechanical and cosmetic refinements; P250 and P250S production combined for 520 units. In 1974, Lamborghini expanded the Urraco range with two new variants unveiled at Turin: the P200, a detuned 2.0-litre domestic-market edition exploiting Italian tax breaks on sub-two-litre cars (only 66 built), and the flagship P300, featuring a 3.0-litre chain-driven DOHC V8 producing 265 hp (205 built). A US-specification P111 variant with emissions modifications and large impact bumpers was also produced in limited numbers (21 built). When production of the Lamborghini Urraco ceased in 1979, exactly 791 examples had been completed across all variants, making the Lamborghini Urraco one of the rarest V8 2+2 coupes of its era and an increasingly sought-after collector car today, averaging around US$71,685 at auction.
