History of the PORSCHE Carrera GT

A total of 1,270 PORSCHE Carrera GT have been produced on earth in Germany between 2003 and 2007. The Porsche Carrera GT (internal project code 980) was born from a racing programme that never raced. Its 5.7-litre V10 traces its ancestry to a stillborn Formula One engine of 1992 and to the Le Mans prototype Porsche shelved in 1999 when the company redirected its resources toward the Cayenne. Rather than waste the work, Porsche turned the LMP unit into a road car, unveiling the Carrera GT as a concept at the Paris Motor Show on 28 September 2000 to an ovation that convinced management to build it. Production of the Porsche Carrera GT began in 2003 at the purpose-built Leipzig plant, and every car was hand-assembled around a carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic monocoque and subframe — a first for a Porsche road car. The naturally aspirated 5,733 cc V10 delivered 603 hp at 8,000 rpm and drove the rear wheels exclusively through a six-speed manual gearbox with a tiny beechwood-topped shift knob, a nod to the 917's balsa lever. The Porsche Carrera GT weighed just 1,380 kg and used a ceramic composite clutch of only 169 mm diameter, mounted low to drop the centre of gravity — a detail that also gave the car its fearsome reputation for demanding drivers. There were no stability control nets to catch a mistake. Porsche originally planned 1,500 units but stopped at 1,270 in May 2006, with the last cars titled as 2007 models, largely because forthcoming US airbag legislation would have required a costly redesign. Two decades on, the Porsche Carrera GT is the analogue supercar collectors chase hardest: values that once hovered around US$300,000 have climbed into seven figures, and the model is routinely cited as the last of the truly unfiltered Porsche hypercars.
