History of the Jaguar E-Type Series 3

A total of 15,387 JAGUAR E-Type Series 3 have been produced on earth in United Kingdom between 1971 and 1975. The Jaguar E-Type Series 3 is the last and the most powerful of the E-Types, and the only one with twelve cylinders. Introduced in March 1971 for model years 1971 to 1975, the Jaguar E-Type Series 3 was built around Jaguar's new 5,343 cc V12 — an all-alloy, single-overhead-cam engine originally developed for the stillborn XJ13 Le Mans prototype — producing 272 hp and, crucially, the effortless torque American buyers wanted. To package the V12 and its cooling, Jaguar used the long 2+2 floorpan for both body styles, so every Series 3 sits on a 105-inch wheelbase; the roadster gained a genuinely usable cockpit and the coupé became a true four-seater. Visually the Jaguar E-Type Series 3 announced itself with a slatted cross-hatch grille, flared wheel arches over wider tracks, four exhaust pipes and, for the first time on an E-Type, standard power steering, uprated brakes and optional air conditioning and automatic transmission. Some 15,387 Series 3 cars were built before production ended in 1975, closing with the fifty commemorative black V12 roadsters that bore a brass plaque signed by Sir William Lyons. For years the Jaguar E-Type Series 3 was the poor relation of the Series 1 — heavier, softer, chrome-bumpered — but the market has been re-rating it hard: the V12 roadster is now the most usable classic E-Type on the road, and the best examples have moved into six figures while a Series 1 3.8 sits far higher still.
