History of the SIMCA 1000 Rallye

The SIMCA 1000 Rallye is the budget-friendly, rear-engined sports saloon that gave a whole generation of young French drivers their first taste of performance motoring. Based on the humble Simca 1000 — itself a hugely successful rear-engined family car launched in 1961 — the SIMCA 1000 Rallye arrived in 1970 as a sporting, affordable answer to cars like the Renault 8 Gordini, designed to be cheap to buy, cheap to race and endlessly tunable. The first SIMCA 1000 Rallye set the visual template that would define the line: black-painted steel wheels, matte-black bonnet and bootlid to cut glare, bold side stripes, auxiliary driving lights and a sportier cabin with bucket seats and a three-spoke wheel. Mechanically it built on the simple rear-engined layout, prioritising light weight, balance and tunability over outright power. The range quickly grew more serious. The Rallye 1 and the celebrated Rallye 2 of 1972 brought a 1,294 cc engine fed by twin Solex carburettors producing around 82 PS, transforming the little Simca into a genuine giant-killer on road and track. In December 1977 the ultimate SIMCA 1000 Rallye 3 appeared, limited to just 1,000 examples, with a highly tuned 1,294 cc engine producing around 103 bhp and standard alloy wheels — today the most collectible version of all. Simca created a one-make racing series around the SIMCA 1000 Rallye, which, like the Coupe Gordini, became a celebrated nursery for aspiring French racing drivers. Production of the Simca 1000 line ended in June 1978 after more than 1.9 million cars. Because so many SIMCA 1000 Rallyes were raced, modified or worn out, clean original examples — especially the Rallye 2 and rare Rallye 3 — are now sought-after and rising classics among fans of affordable 1970s performance.
