History of the TOYOTA MR2 (AW11)

The Toyota MR2 (AW11) holds a landmark place in automotive history as Japan's first mass-produced mid-engine car. Launched in June 1984 after a development program known as project SA-X led by engineer Akio Yoshida, the car grew out of a 1976 Toyota design study aimed at building an enjoyable yet fuel-efficient runabout. Testing evolved the concept into a genuine sports car, and Toyota sharpened the chassis through extensive prototype development. Power came from the celebrated 4A-GE 1.6-liter twin-cam four-cylinder, mounted transversely behind the seats and rated between 112 and 128 hp depending on market. With a curb weight of roughly 1,000 to 1,100 kg, the Toyota MR2 delivered handling balance and rev-happy performance that stunned the press, earning the Car of the Year Japan award for 1984-85. In 1986 Toyota introduced the supercharged 4A-GZE version with 145 hp, alongside a T-bar roof option that broadened the car's appeal. Production of the AW11 generation was handled in Japan through mid-1989, with 163,845 units built across the 1500, 1600 and 1600 Supercharged trims. Today the Toyota MR2 AW11 is a rising star of the 1980s JDM collector market, prized for its angular wedge styling, analog driving experience and bulletproof mechanicals, with clean supercharged examples commanding strong premiums at auction.
