Javelin

The AMC Javelin is an American pony car manufactured by American Motors Corporation across two generations from the 1968 to 1974 model years, with total production of approximately 232,437 units built at the Kenosha, Wisconsin factory. The AMC Javelin debuted on August 22, 1967, going on sale September 26, 1967 with a base price of $2,743, positioned squarely against the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. Styled by Dick Teague on AMC's compact platform, the AMC Javelin offered a long-hood, short-deck fastback silhouette with more passenger room than most competitors. Engine options ranged from an economical inline six to fire-breathing 390 and 401 cubic-inch V8 powerplants in muscle car trim. The first-generation AMC Javelin (1968-1970) also produced the shorter two-seat AMX sibling while the Javelin remained a full four-seat pony car. The second-generation AMC Javelin (1971-1974) received a dramatic restyled body with flared rear haunches, an aggressive front fascia, and a twin-venturi hood scoop. The AMC Javelin became a Trans-Am racing legend under Roger Penske and Mark Donohue, winning the series championship in 1971 and 1972, with AMC winning again in 1976. A special Mark Donohue Edition Javelin was sold to the public, approximately 2,501 examples produced. The Pierre Cardin special edition (1972-1973, roughly 4,152 units) featured bold geometric upholstery and striping. AMC also assembled Javelins under licence in Germany, Mexico, the Philippines, Venezuela, and Australia. The AMC Javelin is widely regarded as one of the most underappreciated pony cars of its era, with values climbing steadily as enthusiasts discover its racing heritage and distinctive American character.
