History of the PEUGEOT 205 Rallye
The PEUGEOT 205 Rallye is the purist's hot hatch — a back-to-basics, lightweight homologation special that many enthusiasts rate as even more rewarding to drive than the celebrated 205 GTI. Engineered and built by Peugeot-Talbot Sport, the PEUGEOT 205 Rallye was launched in 1988 as an affordable competition-bred version of the 205, created to homologate the car for entry-level rallying and to give privateers a cheap, light, tunable platform. Where the GTI chased outright power, the PEUGEOT 205 Rallye chased lightness. It was stripped of almost all sound deadening, electrical luxuries and trim, bringing kerb weight down to just 794 kg. Visually it was unmistakable: white paint (in most markets), body-coloured steel wheels, discreet "Rallye" decals and a deliberately spartan grey interior. The result was a car that felt razor-sharp, eager and endlessly chuckable on a back road. Power for the PEUGEOT 205 Rallye came from a 1,294 cc version of the TU-series four-cylinder, fed by twin Weber carburettors and fitted with a sportier camshaft, producing around 103 PS at a high 6,800 rpm. With so little weight to haul, that modest output delivered genuinely brisk performance and an addictive, rev-hungry character. A small number of 1.9-litre versions were also produced for the German market, where carburettor 1.3s could not be homologated. Produced between 1988 and 1992 with 30,111 examples built, the PEUGEOT 205 Rallye has become a cult hero among 1980s hot-hatch collectors. Because so many were used hard, modified or rallied, clean original cars are increasingly rare and sought after. Today the PEUGEOT 205 Rallye is celebrated as one of the most honest, driver-focused small performance cars of its generation.
