History of the FERRARI 275

The Ferrari 275 debuted at the Paris Salon in October 1964 as a revolutionary grand touring car from Maranello, replacing the 250 GT Lusso. Designed by Pininfarina and bodied by Scaglietti, the Ferrari 275 was the first road-going Ferrari to combine a rear transaxle gearbox with fully independent rear suspension, transforming the car's handling dynamics compared to its live-axle predecessors. Two body styles launched simultaneously: the Ferrari 275 GTB berlinetta coupe and the open 275 GTS spider. The berlinetta evolved through a visible Series I short-nose (239 built, 1964-1965) and Series II long-nose (215 built, 1965-1966), totalling approximately 454 GTB units. The 275 GTS spider accounted for 199 cars through 1966. The pinnacle of the Ferrari 275 family arrived in late 1966 with the Ferrari 275 GTB/4, featuring a race-derived quad-cam four overhead camshaft 3.3-litre V12 producing 300 hp; approximately 350 were built through 1968. The rarest member of the Ferrari 275 family is the GTS/4 NART Spyder, a barchetta commissioned by US importer Luigi Chinetti of the North American Racing Team and built by Scaglietti in 1967-1968 in just 10 examples, making it one of the most valuable road cars in history. Including all variants, approximately 1,013 Ferrari 275 were produced across the four-year production run, with the Ferrari 275 GTB/4 now averaging over US$3.3 million at auction. The Ferrari 275 remains the defining blue-chip Italian GT of the 1960s, prized for its engineering innovation, Pininfarina beauty and V12 soundtrack.
