History of the FERRARI 365 GTB-4 and 365 GTS-4

The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 made its public debut at the Paris Salon in autumn 1968 as the replacement for the 275 GTB/4. It was almost immediately nicknamed the "Daytona" by the media in recognition of Ferrari's 1-2-3 finish at the 1967 Daytona 24 Hours, though the name was never an official Ferrari designation. Bodied by Pininfarina and styled by Leonardo Fioravanti, the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona wrapped its sharp berlinetta lines around a 4.4-litre Tipo 251 V12 fed by six Weber twin-choke 40mm carburettors. With around 352 horsepower, a rear-mounted transaxle for near-perfect balance and a top speed of roughly 174 mph, the Daytona was the fastest road car in the world at its launch and the last front-engined V12 berlinetta before Ferrari moved to mid-engined flagships. An open 365 GTS/4 Spider, announced at the 1969 Frankfurt Show, proved especially popular in the United States and accounted for about ten per cent of sales. Early cars wore a plexiglass headlight panel before switching to pop-up headlamps. The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona was succeeded by the mid-engined 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer in 1973, and today stands as one of the most coveted classic Ferraris of all, with 1,284 berlinettas and 122 spiders built.
