History of the FERRARI Dino 206 GT
A total of 152 FERRARI Dino 206 GT have been produced on earth in Italy between 1968 and 1969.
The Ferrari Dino 206 GT is the car that taught Ferrari to build a mid-engined road car. Named for Alfredo 'Dino' Ferrari, Enzo's son, who had died in 1956 after working on the V6 engine concept, the Dino 206 GT went into production in 1968 and broke two of Maranello's oldest rules at once: it was Ferrari's first mid-engined production car, and its first with fewer than eight cylinders. Because the Dino carried no Ferrari badge — it was sold simply as a 'Dino' — Enzo could distance the marque from a model he considered beneath the prancing horse, while still homologating the V6 for Formula 2. The shape, drawn by Aldo Brovarone and Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina and executed by Carrozzeria Scaglietti, is regarded by many as the most beautiful profile Ferrari ever put into production: the flying buttresses, the concave rear screen and the delicate haunches have been copied for fifty years. What separates the Ferrari Dino 206 GT from the later, more numerous 246 GT is its construction: the entire body is hand-formed in aluminium rather than steel, the wheelbase is shorter, and the transversely mounted 2.0-litre all-alloy 65-degree V6 produces 180 hp at a screaming 8,000 rpm. Only 152 examples of the Ferrari Dino 206 GT were built across 1968 and 1969 before the 2.4-litre 246 GT replaced it. That rarity, combined with the alloy bodywork, has made the Dino 206 GT dramatically more valuable than its successor, with the best cars now crossing seven figures.
